Explosive Emotions take time to build up, containers to put our fears, frustrations, feelings that make us uncomfortable, and triggers to set them off. My exploration of ceramic bombs comes from the idea that every mental container we stuff these difficult emotions into doesn’t have to end with an explosive reaction. Like a bomb, we can defuse it with knowledge, work, and patience. After we do, we end up with vessels empty of their volatility, that we can use to fill with things to help us grow and heal.
This line of work is called Fragile like a Bomb.
Currently pieces from this line are exhibited at the Glen B Blakley Gallery.

Missiles
The missiles come from the idea of how we celebrate freedom as communities in the U.S. Fireworks in particular. We launch literal explosives in the air for light shows. I kept coming back to how we celebrate our victories with these explosives for entertainment and how we simultaneously destroy other communities with explosive missiles of bombardment. How similar they look and how fireworks are often used to celebrate our violent victories. These forms came about due to the ideas surrounding how our celebrations are connected to the destruction of others, and the destruction of pieces of ourselves.
Part of the construction of these vessels meant that I wanted each shot inside to represent an actual part of the missile: the booster rocket, the fuel reserves, the guidance system, and the payload. In fact, the only part that makes this a missile rather than a rocket is the payload - the explosive ordinance.
Drinking is one of the ways I celebrate and I often feel it’s both celebratory and destructive. While it can be fun and bring us closer together as a group, it often results in some kind of destruction of our own health. In a strange way, these forms of celebration come from and encourage destruction. I wanted to recognize that specifically with shots since we rarely take shots alone - we do them as a group - the more the merrier!
The Mindfield
The Mindfield comes from my own struggles with anxiety and how every day feels like walking through a mental minefield. It’s like each day is a not-so-fun game of minesweeper, where the explosions are emotional, in real life, and cause real damage when I mess up. Like with all my bombs, the idea is that taking the time to defuse these mental mines helps make space to grow and heal.
The goal for this currently ongoing project is to create 365 of them, one for each day of the year. I’m currently around 104 of them right now and at first wanted to blast through them and get them done in a single year. Luckily the incentives that would have pushed me to do so have passed and I am creating them at a more reasonable speed - taking care not to relapse my injuries and giving me time to explore these more in depth and with greater intention.
